What Are Your Reading Rituals?

I have this ritual before reading a new book I have bought. First, I open up the book to a random page and smell it. (I love the smell of new books!) Then, I remove the book jacket, unfold it, and read everything on it. After studying the jacket, I feel the texture of the book cover, endpapers, and pages. I also check the spine, headband, and footband of the book. Lastly, I slip the book jacket back on and smell the book pages a couple more times.

The book as an object of art is something to marvel at, wouldn't you say? :o)

What are your reading rituals?

Before I buy the book I already inspect it at the store. I check the sides and corners of the front and back cover and the spine and top, bottom and side edges of the book. When I get home, I likewise remove the book jacket and read everything on it. I leave the jacket off though while I read the book to avoid damaging it, but lovingly put it back on when I'm done and before I add it to my shelves. :)

Ooohhh. I do that, too. I inspect before buying the book. Going over the book once it is mine is more about admiring it. :o)

Isn't it funny though about book jackets? It's supposed to protect the book, but I know many try to protect the jacket itself.

Another jacket protector here! Don't want to wrinkle it.

I like the smell of a new book, too. I always open the book and "break it in" like a librarian taught us when I was little (folding down the pages, alternating front and back till you get to middle pages). I can hear the spine cracking and sighing a little. :) After this stretch, I dig in!

I am appalled that no librarian taught me how to "break in" a book. I will try doing that!

I try to keep my books as pristine as possible so I try to avoid creasing the spine...but I can just imagine how satisfying that sound would be right before "digging in" :)

I smell books too! Love that new book smell. I also take the jacket off to read, more so because it gets in the way, and I've gotten some nasty paper cuts from them, than to protect the cover, though. I touch the book all over, especially if it has raised/embossed parts. And I like the ones that have different textures on the covers. Yeah, I'm a little weird.

Teachergirlbooks, different textures on book covers are absolutely wonderful!

I can't tell everyone how relieved I am that I'm not the only one who smells books. It always seemed a little strange to me. My mom would catch me once in a while and give me her patented "Estas Loca" look. I read the back cover, the inside page and any author acknowlegdements. And I, er, smell the pages....

I like the smell of the bookstore also.

Hi, Mardel! Let's be loca together! I don't just smell the pages before I start reading, I smell them while reading too. LOL.

I've never actually smelled a book. I'm missing out, haha. I always read everything about the book including the summary on the inside, the flap, the back and the authors bio. I love the crinkling sound of the pages though. I'm not really a jacket protector since I don't have too many hardcover books, but when I do, I protect them!
This is random, but I've got a very organied bookshelf. It starts with YA and MG and since starting my blog, I've organized my books by ethnicity as it helps me see what group of color I read the least of (right now it's Native Americans :( Then comes adult fiction and my favorite classics. My bookshelf is overflowing so I either need more shelves or to re-organize!

No Kindle reading here!! LOL

I love this...think I'll have to start a ritual of my own now!

Ari, I need new bookshelves too! I've ended up putting books in my closet.

Edi, seriously? No ritual???
I just try to hide the book somewhere among the others, so that my husband won't notice that I bought one more...
