<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Do you have a YA novel—or a YA
novel idea—tucked away for a rainy day? Have you been putting off
pitching your idea simply because you’re not sure how to pitch an agent?
No problem! All you have to do is submit the first 250 words of your
novel and you can win exposure to editors and a critique of your manuscript by
one of New York’s top literary agents, <a href="http://www.serendipitylit.com/clients/item/regina-brooks" target="_blank">Regina Brooks</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Regina Brooks is the CEO of </span><a href="http://www.serendipitylit.com/" target="_blank">Serendipity Literary Agency</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> and the author of the award-winning book </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Great-Books-Young-Adults-ebook/dp/B00NT4ISEE/ref=mt_kindle?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=" target="_blank"><i>Writing Great Books For Young Adults</i></a><u style="font-style: italic;">,</u><i> </i></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">now available in its second

<span style="font-family: inherit;">In honor of </span><a href="https://nanowrimo.org/" target="_blank">National Novel Writing Month</a><span style="font-family: inherit;">—an

get started on that novel by offering an incentive for completing the first 250
words.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Here's How It Works</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Entering the contest is
easy and the rules are simple. Entries are to be submitted via the
<a href="http://serendipitylit.com/contest" target="_blank">contest website</a></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">. Valid entries shall include the title
and only the first 250 words of the manuscript.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One entry per person; anyone age 14+ can apply. There is a $15 entry fee. Open to the US and Canada (void where prohibited). Entries will be accepted from 12:01 a.m. (ET) November
1, 2018 to 11:59 p.m. (ET) November 30, 2018.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">YA literary agent Regina Brooks and her team will read all of the entries and
determine the top 20 submissions. These submissions will then be read by editors
at some of the top publishing houses (who will be announced as we get
closer to the contest). These judges will whittle the top 20 down to five
winners, including a Grand Prize Winner.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="background-color: white;">The Grand Prize Winner will have the opportunity to

plus a collection of gourmet teas from </span><a href="http://www.possibiliteas.co/" target="_blank">Possibiliteas</a>!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">The Top Five Entrants (including the Grand Prize Winner)
will receive a 15-minute, one-on-one pitch session with Regina Brooks. They will also
receive commentary on their submissions from editors at HarperCollins; Little, Brown; Macmillan; Skyhorse; Simon and Schuster; Abrams Books; Penguin Random House; Disney; and James Patterson’s new imprint, JIMMY

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUKAp4T_TR1-XBhOzXr4jbLwY1ztgBZn7lE5WuB6Oqr60aAJzEYiWconTpB2uxhWa3YGEeJSOq7OCGkrx2lxcAFflDHFGOpRTUjABLzUfqSplXsO6paUhTmX6C2jbYDaMb2uGV/s1600/Plot+Without+A+Cause.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="402" data-original-width="683" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUKAp4T_TR1-XBhOzXr4jbLwY1ztgBZn7lE5WuB6Oqr60aAJzEYiWconTpB2uxhWa3YGEeJSOq7OCGkrx2lxcAFflDHFGOpRTUjABLzUfqSplXsO6paUhTmX6C2jbYDaMb2uGV/s400/Plot+Without+A+Cause.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
Imagine a
YA publishing process without gatekeepers. One where editors and agents
read the manuscripts that readers love, not vice versa. One where anyone
with a knack for writing, a passion to succeed, and a little flair for
self-promotion, has a fair shot at being published.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
All too
frequently, this isn’t the case. Books often get rejected for reasons
beyond authors’ control. One editor turned down an ultimately successful
book by <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/10877825/The-rejection-letters-how-publishers-snubbed-11-great-authors.html"><span style="color: #1155cc;">saying</span></a>, “The girl
doesn't, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift
that book above the 'curiosity' level.” The book in question? <i>The
Diary of Anne Frank</i>. Furthermore, according to the Cooperative
Children’s Book Center, only about <a href="http://ccbc.education.wisc.edu/books/pcstats.asp"><span style="color: #1155cc;">10% of all YA books</span></a> accepted for
publication feature “multi-cultural content.” Clearly, there are some
blind spots that need addressing in the publishing industry.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
It’s with
this vision in mind that Publishizer is launching its YA book proposal contest
called <a href="https://publishizer.com/contests/plot-without-a-cause/"><span style="color: #1155cc;">Plot Without a Cause</span></a>.
Publishizer is a startup seeking to fill a hole in the publishing
industry through crowdfunding. It works like this:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
You write
the book proposal. You know the book proposal I’m talking about.
The one you’ve been daydreaming about for years. The one that just
popped into your head last week and you haven’t stopped thinking about since.
The one for the manuscript that’s been dearly loved by you but maybe not
so much yet by the publishing industry. <i>That </i>one. Then you
register (for free!) on Publishizer’s website and post your proposal in the
Plot Without a Cause section (again—for free!).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
Now this
is when you’ll have to start hustling. Crowdfunding runs on pre-orders,
so you had better start promoting that proposal. Reach out over social
media, post on your blog, email your old roommates—whatever it takes to start
building buzz. If you get the most preorders by the time the contest
ends, you’ll win $1000 dollars. And if you don’t have the highest number
of preorders, don’t worry—you’ll still be queried to major publishers who fit
your proposal.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
Previous
Publishizer contest participants have gotten interest and landed deals with a
variety of traditional publishing companies, including Harvard Square Books,
She Writes Press, and Weiser. Publishizer takes a small commission
on pre-orders when you choose a publisher at the end.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
Every
year, thousands of books are rejected by the publishing world for reasons that
have nothing to do with the quality of the book—they’re too mainstream or not
mainstream enough, too similar to books already being published or too
different from books already being published. Or the literary agent just
doesn’t stand to make much money on the deal so they pass on a perfectly good book!
Imagine how many brilliant YA manuscripts go unpublished every year
thanks to frustrating rejections. Imagine how many hugely talented
authors quietly give up on their dreams, just because the gate to a traditional
publishing path isn’t open to them.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
With
their new YA book proposal contest, Plot Without a Cause, Publishizer is
seeking to level the playing field. Publishing decisions shouldn’t be
based solely on a literary agent’s judgement or how many friends you have in
the industry. They should be based on quality of writing and how many readers
the book attracts. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
Great
books get overlooked all the time, and this is an opportunity to show acquiring
editors that yours is worth paying attention to. Not to mention the readership and funds you could
gain in the process. Crowdfunding (or
crowd-publishing, in this case) is growing in popularity and brings a personal
touch back to book sales—for readers and publishers. Are you in?<o:p></o:p></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The International Book Giving Day team is delighted to announce that Marianne Dubuc is the illustrator behind 2017’s official poster. Libraries, schools, and bookshops are encouraged to download, print, and display Dubuc’s poster to celebrate the love of reading and encourage others to give books to children on International Book Giving Day, February 14. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now in its 5th year, International Book Giving Day continues to grow from strength to strength, reaching places such as Nepal, India, Canada, South Africa, UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Nigeria, Fiji, Czech Republic, USA, Cambodia, Hungary, Philippines, and Romania.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">On February 14, #bookgivingday, participants are encouraged to give books to children. This can takes many forms, the only limit is the imagination. Books have been sent to child refugees in Calais, France; a new library was created in Cape Town, South Africa; in Uganda the Mpambara-Cox Foundation gifted books to children, for many it was the first time they had been given a book of their own. In 2014, Scholastic Australia went to the Melbourne Children’s Hospital and gifted a book to every child. People continue to be creative in so many different ways, all keen to share the love of books. More examples can be viewed <a href="https://bookgivingday.com/2014/02/14/international-book-giving-day-part-ii/" target="_blank">here</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Turning the commercialization of Valentine’s Day on its head, people across the globe are encouraged to spread the love of reading by getting books into the hands of as many children as possible on February 14. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"We are over the moon that Marianne Dubuc has created such a wonderful poster for #bookgivingday." - Emma Perry, IBGD.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">International Book Giving Day is a 100% volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children’s access to, and enthusiasm for, books.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">International Book Giving Day’s focus is on encouraging people worldwide to give a book to a child on February 14.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We invite individuals to …</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">1) gift a book to a friend or family member,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">2) leave a book in a waiting room for children to read</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">3) donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital, shelter, or to an organization that distributes used books to children in need.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In addition, we encourage people to support the work of nonprofit organizations (i.e. charities) that work year round to give books to children.</span><br />

I have a very special guest on my blog today: Betsy Bird, one of my favorite kidlit bloggers! Her passion for kidlit and her <a href="http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/#_" target="_blank">excellent blog posts</a> are some of the reasons I decided to start blogging about kidlit and YA lit! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
Betsy has written a book with her fellow American kidlit bloggers, the late <a href="http://collectingchildrensbooks.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Peter Sieruta</a> and <a href="http://blaine.org/sevenimpossiblethings/" target="_blank">Julie Danielson</a>. (Julie is also one of my favorite kidlit bloggers, and one of my favorite people in the whole wide world.) There aren't physical copies of <i>Wild Things</i> in the Philippines yet, but if you click <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Wild-Things-Mischief-Childrens-Literature-ebook/dp/B00LLO6T68/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=&qid=" target="_blank">here</a>, us Philippine readers can get Kindle editions. <i>Wild Things</i> is a behind-the-scenes look at the American children's book industry. A *naughty* behind-the-scenes look. The book *is* about "acts of mischief in children's literature." :D</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
Betsy, thank you so much for visiting Into the Wardrobe. Dear readers, Betsy's guest blog post is below.</div>

By Betsy Bird</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You may have seen YA author John Green allude to this
recently. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span>Not too long ago he created
this lovely little Mental Floss video called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTtx_rdTAYI" target="_blank">47 Charming Facts AboutChildren’s Books</a>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At around 2:53
you’ll hear John talk about the great Margaret Wise Brown.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>John points out that Ms. Brown almost
randomly left the rights to her classic picture book <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Goodnight Moon</i> to the neighbor kid next door.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Literally.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The boy next door.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But this being
a quick video John doesn’t exactly go into any detail.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Curious about why exactly Margaret did that
and what the effect was on the kid?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In <a href="http://wildthings.blaine.org/?page_id=2" target="_blank"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Wild Things: Acts of Mischief in Children’s Literature</i></a> (written
by myself, Julie Danielson, and the late Peter Sieruta) we looked into the
story and here’s what we found.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The fact of the matter is that Ms. Brown was lovely,
vivacious, and died tragically young.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As
recounted in our book, she was just 42 when she died of an embolism.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In fact, it was the cute little can-can kicks
she did for her doctor to show how great she was feeling that ultimately did
the deed.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Few perfectly healthy 42-year-olds expect to be dead at any
moment, so we should take Margaret’s will with a grain of salt.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She apparently changed it more than once and
had she lived she probably wouldn’t have kept it the same for very long.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nonetheless, and for whatever reason, she did
indeed leave the rights to what would become her greatest work to Albert
Clarke, her 9-year-old neighbor.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Weird?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Not as much as
you might think.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>See, the fact of the
matter is that <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Goodnight Moon</i> wasn’t
really a hit in Margaret’s lifetime.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It
did okay but it took some time for the book to gain any ground in the cultural
mindset.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>So when she granted Arthur the
rights it wasn’t supposed to be any great shakes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Next thing he knows, the kid’s a millionaire.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Fabulous, right?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Apparently not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Though it might be a bit of a stretch to say
it this way, money ruined Arthur.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But
for the details of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">how</i> exactly he was
ruined I’m afraid you’re just going to have to read our book.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sorry about that, but trust me when I say
that I hope John Green learns a lesson or two from Margaret’s story.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The next time he feels like leaving the
rights to, say, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">An Abundance of
Katherines</i> to little Johnny down the street as a nice gesture, maybe he should
think again.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Trust me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Little Johnny will be just fine without the
cash.</div>

We are seeking papers that investigate the intersections between the
histories, theories, and practices of children's rights and children's
literature. In response to the ratification of the United Nation's
Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC) in 1989, advocates and
scholars have debated the necessity and revealed the complexity of
defining and implementing children's rights across the globe. Critical
discourse on children's rights, however, has not yet fully examined the
role that children's literature plays in shaping, promoting,
implementing and interrogating children's rights. This special issue
invites scholars to explore the connections between the institutions of
children's rights and children's literature.<br /> <br /> Possible topics include, but are not limited to:<br /><br /> Depictions of young people's political and/or economic participation in children's and young adult literature<br />
Literary representations of child soldiers, child laborers, child sex
workers and other young people whose rights are deemed violated<br /> The role of children's literature in fulfilling young people's rights (such as the right to education and the right to leisure)<br />
The relationships between charters on human and children's rights (such
as the 1930 White House Convention Children's Charter, the 1948
Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1989 United Nation's
Convention on the Rights of the Child) and twentieth-century children's
literature<br /> How historical fiction and non-fiction about other rights
movements (women's rights, gay rights, Civil Rights, labor rights,
immigrant rights, etc. ) attempt to shape young readers' understanding
