My birthday

My birthday this year was better than my birthday last year. Yay! =D I was able to celebrate with my family and friends and I ate lots of yummy food and received lots of nice presents. =D (For some reason, this year I literally got dozens of pretty handbags as gifts. =)) My loved ones started greeting me (in person or through text messages/cellphone calls) midnight and some are still wishing me well today. Hehehe. I had to work the morning of my birthday. I had my class for the intensive English language program of the language learning center. I had lunch with my language center family (I had Japanese food) and we devoured upside down apple pie (baked by my best friend CY) with vanilla ice cream. =9 CY and I went shopping in the afternoon. My mom (who's in town visiting) cooked/prepared delicious food for a special family dinner: salad, Asian noodles, barbeque pork and chicken, and a tapioca dessert with fruits. And there was yet more upside down apple pie a la mode from CY. =) CY's upside down apple pie is warm, very sweet comfort food that reminds me of snow/winter and Christmas! =)

The best part is my birthday celebration isn't over yet! I'm still going to celebrate next week with the loved ones I didn't get to spend time with yesterday. =)

Announcement

I am taking a break from teaching for one to two years. I need time in the world outside of the academe so that I will be refreshed and a better person for my future students. I might also teach in another university when I go back to teaching.

Yeah! Who's the Man?!

My youngest brother Brian represented the Philippines in the 1st World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Seoul, South Korea from Sept. 4-6. (Poomsae is "forms" in taekwondo. It's sort of like the exhibition part of the martial art. As opposed to the sparring element.) In the men's category for his age bracket (Brian is 21), out of 41 countries, he placed 12th. And in the pairs category, out of 31 countries, he and his partner placed 9th. Congratulations Brian! =D

Student evaluations can be really confusing. What did you like the most about the teacher? The teacher was kind. What did you like the least about the teacher? The teacher was too nice. Huh? These came from the exact same class (but different students of course). What did you like the most about the course? The debate activity. What did you like the least about the course? The debate activity. Again, these are students' responses from the same class. I can go on and on and on with the examples. What half the class loved, the other half hated. So what am I supposed to do? I know I can't please everyone, but geez, this can be really frustrating

The Devil Wears Prada

Wednesday night I watched The Devil Wears Prada with CY. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I mean, I expected some focus on the clothes and/or on the physical transformation of Anne Hathaway's character, but the movie didn't really have any focus on those things. The movie wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. I also expected to get excited about fashion and want to go shopping because of the movie (other people said that was the result of their watching the movie), but it didn't have that effect on me. The good things about the movie: Meryl Streep looked gorgeous and her acting was wonderful (as usual), and the main characters were nice and three dimensional and fleshed out - no flat characters.
